Environmental Stewardship – Protecting the Environment through Wise Resource Use

At Hord Livestock Co., Inc., we view our commitment to the environment as a commitment to our children.  For that reason, there are numerous steps taken to protect the soil, water, and air surrounding our operations. 

We minimize the impact of our swine operations on any single community by sharing our resources as we contract with numerous family farms, spread out over more than ten counties.  We also participate in the state and pork producer sponsored Environmental Assurance Program, which provides training and education regarding environmental protection.  Other steps we have taken include installing filter strips that buffer runoff between our farms and drainage ditches, river, and streams; implementing a grid sampling program through GPS, which allows us to soil test each two acre quadrant on our farms so that we do not apply more nutrients than necessary; using a feed additive, Microaid, that has been proven to effectively reduce the amount of ammonia produced by pigs, thus reducing odor; and implementing our approved SCS Manure Management Plan.
